Local 214's membership includes several thousand school employees in numerous school districts in both lower and upper Michigan.  We represent the full range of K-12 non-certified support classifications, including school Secretaries, Teacher's Aides, Library Employees, Dietary, Maintenance and Custodial staff, school Bus Drivers and Mechanics.

In addition, our membership in this division also includes separate supervisory units of high school Principals.

As school districts continue to suffer losses in revenue as a result of decreased taxes and inadequate legislative funding, school employees are becoming increasingly targeted for downsizing through layoffs, subcontracting (food services, bussing, maintenance), and privatization.

With the passage of PA 112, school employees lost the ability to negotiate the length of a school day, school year, their health insurance carrier, and the right to negotiate the effects of privatization.  In addition, PA 112 inflicted additional penalties on striking school employees.

Local 214 has successfully negotiated improvements and worked to protect the job security of its members in this division despite these legislative and financial challenges.  With over 40 years of experience in this field, we have an intimate knowledge and excellent track record of representing employees in this division.
